Based on centuries of diplomatic, cultural, and spiritual connections, India and Japan have a Special Strategic and Global Partnership. Since their founding in 1952, diplomatic ties have developed through a number of alliances, culminating in the Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014. These days, collaboration encompasses trade, investment, infrastructure, research and technology, digital innovation, healthcare, sustainable energy, climate action, defence, and interpersonal interactions. Strengthening regional cooperation, India's Act East Policy, SAGAR, and Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative complement Japan's Free and Open Indo-Pacific agenda. In order to strengthen their long-term strategic alliance, both countries signed important agreements at the 15th Annual Summit in 2025 and pledged to support Japanese private investment of Rs. 5.8 lakh crore.
