Summary:

India's leather and footwear sector should aim for exports of Rs. 1.40 lakh crore (US$15 billion) in five to six years by utilising Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), entering new markets, and enhancing quality, branding, design, and sustainability, according to Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal. He stated that the industry may increase exports from the present US$4–4.5 billion while speaking at the Council for Leather Exports National Export Excellence Awards 2024– 2025. He emphasised diversity, cutting-edge technology, improved packaging, and environmental compliance while pointing out that free trade agreements (FTAs) give access to 38 industrialised nations. Goyal stated that with sustained government backing and modernisation efforts, the industry, which currently employs over 40 lakh people, could generate one crore employment.
