Summary:
In May 2026, India's steel industry continued to grow rapidly due to demand from manufacturing, building, and infrastructure. While completed steel output jumped 7.7% to 13.94 million tonnes, crude steel production increased 2.9% year over year to 14.21 million tonnes. With strong domestic demand, consumption increased by 9% to 14.33 million tonnes. Crude steel output reached 28.04 million tonnes in April and May of FY27. output and consumption of finished steel increased by 6.4% and 8.7%, respectively. Steel exports jumped 29.9% to 0.51 million tonnes, while imports increased 62.5% to 0.69 million tonnes. With the help of expansion projects and the Green Steel Initiative, which certified 94 manufacturers in 15 states, India's steelmaking capacity surpassed 220 MTPA in FY26.
